Berdych, Monfils ease into quarters

Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils booked their place in the Open Sud de France quarter-finals after both notched comfortable wins on Thursday.

Top seed Berdych needed just 56 minutes to defeat Florent Serra 6-0 6-2, hitting nine aces and saving all three break points on his way to victory in Montpellier.

The world No.7 Czech will next face France's Nicolas Mahut, a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 winner over German Florian Mayer.

Third seed Monfils had few problems against Michael Russell, winning 84 percent of points on his first serve in the 6-3 6-3 win over the American.
