One of Australia's most popular car racing identities says he will take on a gruelling desert race in Central Australia next year.

V8 Supercar driver Craig Lowndes, who has taken out Bathurst for the past three years, says he has always wanted to race in the Finke Desert Race, near Alice Springs, but it had not fitted in with his schedule in the past.

Lowndes says he wants to race on the desert track on two wheels rather than four.

"A lot of our guys in Triple 8 are all dirt or keen motorbike dirt riders.

"And hopefully we can put a team together and at least attempt to conquer it.

"I know I've been watching videos of it from the past and watching football players like Tony Lockett and a few others conquer the ride down and back.

"It's something that's very exciting."
