Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea may have laser eye surgery at the end of the season to cure his long-sightedness, a UK newspaper says.

The Spaniard, whose first season at Old Trafford has been full of errors, wears contact lenses during matches.

Manchester United knew of the condition when they signed him for STG18.3 million ($A27.38 million) last summer and have recommended he have surgery in June, the Guardian said.

De Gea was dropped from the United team three matches ago after a number of mistakes.
